School: School of Social Sciences, Department of Social and Political Sciences. This three-year Bachelor of Arts with Honours (BA Hons) in Politics is a distinctive degree that examines the theory and practice of politics, integrating both national and international perspectives. At NTU, learning means doing, with a focus on both great theory and grassroots activism. You'll analyze how systems operate, how countries are governed, and how decisions are made, while also putting fundamentally human issues of social justice, morality, and ethics under the microscope. The curriculum explores political identity, contentious political issues, conspiracy theories, and global political marketing. Core modules include "Study and Research Skills," "Politics and International Relations in Practice," "Media, Power and Truth," "British Politics and Beyond," and "Politics, Young Citizens, Place & Belonging." In later years, modules like "Social Research" and "Careers and Experience in Politics and International Relations" are offered. You can also learn a language (Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin or Spanish) as part of your degree with optional modules. The course culminates in a final year dissertation on a topic of your choice.
Career options for graduates are broad, covering roles in both the public and private sectors. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in local politics, local government, the police service, the civil service, public relations, and organizations that value an understanding of international and global events. The program's emphasis on applied skills, including opportunities to work with local activist groups, complete placements, and design campaigns, significantly enhances employability. Alumni have pursued roles as civil servants (including HM Treasury), political assistants (including the Houses of Parliament and local government), and even as politicians (Councillors and MPs). The versatile skills developed—critical thinking, communication, research, and an understanding of complex global processes—are highly valued by employers.
Nottingham Trent University offers work experience opportunities on every degree, with extensive partnerships with businesses and industry, ensuring students gain practical, real-world skills. It is recognized as a sustainable university with many green initiatives, including generating its own energy.
