School: School of Molecular Bioscience, College of MVLS (Medicine, Veterinary & Life Sciences). This one-year full-time Master of Science (MSc) program is designed to meet the growing research demands in the NHS, industry, and academia for scientists with a strong foundation in biological knowledge combined with computational, statistical, analytical, and practical skills crucial for driving precision medicine. The curriculum provides state-of-the-art knowledge relating to the mechanisms of chronic disease progression, how these underlying causes are therapeutically targeted, and the technologies used for detection and diagnosis. The program has an "umbrella" structure, with core aspects covering themes unique to precision medicine, such as precision genomics, diagnostics and therapeutics, 'omics' for precision medicine, research skills, and 'big data' for precision medicine. Students choose a specialism in Cancer, Cardiovascular, or Inflammatory Disease, allowing for focused and in-depth knowledge in their chosen area. The program includes a substantial research project, often with opportunities for "wet" lab skills or bioinformatics training, and benefits from the University of Glasgow being at the center of several important precision medicine centers, including Stratified Medicine Scotland and the Imaging Centre of Excellence, offering real-world insights and networking opportunities.
Career options for graduates are highly promising in the rapidly expanding field of precision medicine, spanning academia, industry, and healthcare. The University of Glasgow, a member of the prestigious Russell Group and the fourth oldest university in the English-speaking world, offers research-intensive learning within a global network (Universitas21), ensuring excellent graduate prospects. Graduates are exceptionally well-prepared for roles in biomedical research (both "wet" lab and "dry" computational roles), biotechnology, pharmaceutical industries, and clinical sciences within the NHS. Potential job titles include: Research Associate, Project Manager, Trainee Clinical Scientist (NHS), Healthcare Scientist Practitioner/Scientific Support Officer (NHS), Medical Recruiter, Data Scientist, Medical Writer, and Field Application Scientist. Many graduates also pursue further doctoral studies (PhDs) in related fields such as medicine, biotechnology, immunology, and cardiovascular science, or even progress to graduate entry routes to medicine. The program's strong links with the Precision Medicine Scotland - Innovation Centre and various industrial partners provide invaluable networking and potential project placement opportunities, enhancing employability.
The University of Glasgow is a member of the UK's prestigious Russell Group, an association of leading UK research-intensive universities committed to maintaining the very best research, an outstanding teaching and learning experience, and unrivalled links with business and the public sector. As the fourth oldest university in the English-speaking world, it boasts a rich history of academic excellence and innovation. Furthermore, the University of Glasgow is a member of Universitas21 (U21), a global network of world-leading, research-intensive universities, fostering international collaboration and research opportunities. The College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences (MVLS) is renowned for its cutting-edge research and state-of-the-art facilities, providing an ideal environment for advanced studies in precision medicine. The city of Glasgow itself is a vibrant and culturally rich student city.
