School: School of Social Sciences. This British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited three-year full-time Bachelor of Science (Hons) program provides a comprehensive exploration of the human mind, brain, behaviour, and experience. It covers all the core areas of Psychology stipulated by the BPS curriculum. In the first two years, students complete core modules in biological, social, developmental, and cognitive psychology, as well as conceptual and historical issues. Rigorous training in research methods and statistics is integrated throughout the curriculum. In the final year, students complete an empirical research project on a topic of their choosing, supervised by a research-active staff member. Students also have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of optional modules to develop specialist knowledge, or can take part in the innovative Professional Practice in Psychology module, working as a 'consultant psychologist' on real-life problem scenarios for external organizations. The program has a strong emphasis on work-like experience, and students have the option to complete a four-year course that includes a year-long work placement (sandwich placement) between Year Two and Year Three. The Department of Psychology is one of the largest in the UK, with over 150 expert psychologists, and offers innovative Psychology laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment including VR suites, eye-tracking software, driving simulators, and a mock prison cell for research and data analysis. Graduates with at least a 2:2 honours degree are eligible to receive the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) of the BPS, which is essential for further professional training in psychology.
This BPS-accredited degree develops highly sought-after transferable skills, including numerical skills (statistical analysis), analytical skills, critical thinking, communication, presentation, and problem-solving. While a career as a 'psychologist' typically requires postgraduate qualifications (often a doctorate), this BSc provides an excellent foundation. Graduates are well-prepared for further academic study (e.g., MSc, PhD) or professional training, or for diverse roles across various sectors. Common career paths include: Research Assistant, Data Analyst, Human Resources, Marketing, Advertising, Social Research, Civil Service, roles in education, healthcare (e.g., mental health support worker), criminal justice, and charity work. Nottingham Trent University's emphasis on work-like experience (including a dedicated placement year option and in-module practical work) and extensive partnerships with businesses and industry enhance graduate employability.
Nottingham Trent University provides work experience opportunities on every degree, including the option of a year-long sandwich placement, and has extensive partnerships with businesses and industry, offering valuable real-world application and networking. The university is a sustainable institution with many green initiatives, including generating its own energy. It boasts one of the largest Psychology departments in the UK, with over 150 expert academics and world-leading research (evidenced by REF 2021). Students benefit from innovative, state-of-the-art Psychology laboratories, providing hands-on research experience. The BPS accreditation ensures the degree meets rigorous professional standards and provides the necessary foundation for aspiring Chartered Psychologists.
