Department: Department of Psychology. This British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited four-year integrated Master of Science (Hons) program offers an in-depth, research-intensive study of psychology. The MSci and BSc students take identical modules and are taught together during Years 1 and 2, covering core BPS areas including biological bases of behaviour, cognitive, developmental, social, and individual differences, along with rigorous training in research methods and statistics. From Year 3, the MSci course diverges, offering advanced modules and an extended, in-depth research project. Students specialize in one of three pathways: Clinical Psychology; Developmental Disorders; or Neuroscience and Neuroimaging, reflecting the department's research strengths. The MSci provides extensive practical experience, close collaboration with faculty on cutting-edge research, and advanced training in empirical investigation and scientific data analysis. Facilities include a state-of-the-art sleep lab, specialized labs for developmental, sensory, virtual reality research, and access to the York Neuroimaging Centre (YNiC) with advanced techniques like EEG, MEG, fMRI, and TMS. The degree is accredited by the BPS, conferring eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) upon successful completion, which is a crucial first step for professional psychological training. The MSci is particularly beneficial for students aiming for scientific careers or those seeking a valuable Master's-level qualification to enhance employability and chances for PhD programs.
This integrated Master's degree from a Russell Group university significantly enhances career prospects, particularly for research-oriented roles or further advanced study. Graduates are exceptionally well-prepared for PhD programs in Psychology, or for professional doctorates to become Educational Psychologists. It also enhances general employability for careers requiring advanced analytical, research, and data handling skills. While careers as a 'psychologist' (e.g., Clinical, Forensic, Occupational) generally require further specialized postgraduate degrees (often a doctorate), the MSci provides a competitive edge in applications. Graduates often find roles in: Research Assistant/Associate, Data Scientist, Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (PWP) roles (often with further training), roles in healthcare, education, social research, human resources, marketing, and policy development. The university's strong research focus and graduate prospects are highly beneficial.
The University of York is a member of the UK's prestigious Russell Group, known for its world-class, research-intensive learning and teaching. The university's Psychology Department is highly ranked (e.g., =65th in THE World University Rankings by Subject 2025 for Psychology) and boasts excellent graduate prospects. Located in a historic and friendly city in northern England, it provides a supportive and stimulating environment. The MSci program offers unparalleled access to cutting-edge research facilities, including specialized labs and the York Neuroimaging Centre. Teaching is delivered by internationally-reputed researchers who are at the forefront of their fields, offering students direct exposure to leading-edge psychological science. The BPS accreditation ensures the highest academic and professional standards.
