School: College of Life and Environmental Sciences, School of Psychology. This 4-year full-time integrated Master of Science (MSci) is designed for students considering careers in applied psychology, such as clinical, forensic, or educational psychology. The program combines a strong foundation in core psychological theory (similar to the BSc Psychology degree in the first three years) with a specialized, intensive fourth year focused on psychological practice. This includes a crucial six-month external work placement, typically three days a week, supervised by a qualified psychologist. Students gain hands-on experience in direct and indirect client work, psychological assessment, intervention, and reflective practice within settings like the Probation Service, educational services, or the NHS. The program is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), providing eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) upon successful completion with the required academic standard (typically a Lower Second Class Honours and passing the empirical project). This is a vital first step towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist in the UK. The curriculum also includes advanced modules on the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of applied psychology, developing students as "reflective scientist-practitioners."
The MSci (Hons) Psychology and Psychological Practice is specifically designed to be a first step towards a career as a Chartered Psychologist (Clinical, Forensic, or Educational) in the UK, although further postgraduate training (e.g., Doctorate) is required. Graduates are highly competitive for Assistant Psychologist posts and other roles requiring advanced psychological understanding and practical experience. Career options include: Assistant Psychologist, Trainee Clinical Psychologist, Trainee Forensic Psychologist, Trainee Educational Psychologist, Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (PWP), Mental Health Worker, roles in Probation Services, Prison Services, NHS (various roles), Social Work, research roles (e.g., in academia or policy), human resources, and education. The unique six-month work placement provides a significant advantage in the job market.
The University of Birmingham is a member of the UK's prestigious Russell Group, known for its world-class research and teaching excellence.
