Academic college: New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences (School of Social and Behavioral Sciences). This Master of Arts program addresses urgent social issues related to human security, labor, migration, children, family, education, and the environment. The coursework in this theoretically and methodologically rigorous program examines social issues in contexts defined by multiple intersecting forms of social identity and disadvantage, including gender, race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, and nationality. The program trains students to develop ethical and intellectually sound responses to issues affecting vulnerable populations, exploring key issues, theories, and applied practices related to global justice and humanitarianism. It emphasizes bridging the gap between theoretical understanding of human rights and the reality of their violation. The program culminates in either a capstone e-portfolio, an applied project, or a traditional MA thesis. Students have opportunities to participate in original research, including on immigration, and can complete internships domestically or internationally.
Graduates are prepared to lead or advance careers in fields that require deep understanding and practical application of social justice and human rights principles. The program develops strong skills in research, analysis, grant writing, and advocacy. Career paths include: Advocacy work (nonprofit, government agencies, international organizations), Humanitarian work, International law and advocacy (often with further legal study), Roles addressing forced migration, human trafficking, gender-based violence, or racialized violence, Policy analysis, Community organizing, Program management in NGOs, Research roles in social justice.
