School: School of Social and Political Sciences, College of Social Sciences. This four-year undergraduate honours degree offers a comprehensive and critical understanding of how societies work and how they are shaped by various forces. You will be introduced to key concepts, theories, and methods sociologists use to understand contemporary societies and processes of social change, exploring questions of class, identities, inequalities, everyday life, health, development, and relationships. The program allows for flexibility, enabling students to combine Sociology with other subjects in years 1 and 2 (leading to various joint honours options, e.g., Sociology with Quantitative Methods, Sociology/Business & Management, Sociology/History, etc.). In the Honours years (Years 3 and 4), students delve into advanced topics reflecting staff research interests (e.g., gender, sexualities, drugs & culture, contemporary migrations, media, criminology). A core component of the Honours years is dedicated training in social research methods, enabling students to design, conduct, and report on an original piece of social research (often a dissertation or extended project), supported by an academic supervisor.
Graduates are highly versatile due to their strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, applicable across numerous sectors. Career options include: Social Researcher, Policy Officer (in government, NGOs, charities), Market Researcher, Data Analyst, Advice Worker, Community Development Worker, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Officer, Human Resources, Journalist, Public Relations, Local and Central Government (e.g., Civil Service Fast Streamer), Education (Further/Higher Education Teacher), Criminal Justice (e.g., Police, Probation), Health Service Management, International Aid/Development Worker, and roles in media, marketing, and IT. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study (Master's or PhD) in specialized areas of sociology or related fields like social work, law, or public policy.
