School: School of Animal, Rural and Environmental Sciences. This degree offers a unique opportunity to study a wider range of exotic species (non-domestic and non-UK wildlife) than traditional animal science degrees. The curriculum focuses on the biology of these species, applying scientific principles including anatomy, physiology, behaviour, genetics, ecology, and nutrition to their welfare, breeding, conservation, and management in both captive and non-captive populations. The course includes field trips to UK zoos and wildlife parks, with an additional final year residential field course (previous locations have included Scotland and South Africa). Core scientific study is supported by the specialist Animal Unit at the Brackenhurst Campus, housing over 250 animals of 70 species. Assessment methods include coursework, written exams, and practical assessments. Students can opt for a four-year 'sandwich' course which includes a year-long work placement.
Graduates pursue diverse careers in animal care, conservation, and scientific fields. Career options include: Zoo Keeper/Animal Care Professional, Animal Welfare Officer, Conservation Biologist/Officer, Research Technician in animal science or genetics, Wildlife Rehabilitator, Field Ecologist, Education Officer (in zoos or conservation organizations), Environmental Consultant, Animal Trainer, roles in Wildlife Management, Science Communication, and Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS).
