Faculty: Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Language and Linguistics. This four-year BA (Hons) in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) program includes a placement year, providing valuable professional experience. The curriculum provides a thorough grounding in English language, teaching methodologies, and practical TEFL training. In your first year, you take two practical TEFL modules (60 credits) which provide the content required for a TEFL-initiate qualification. In your second year, you take three more practical TEFL modules (another 60 credits) that build on teaching methodology, guided preparation, and teaching practice. On successful completion of these second-year modules, you are awarded a stand-alone certificate in TEFL, which significantly aids in starting a teaching career. The program also explores topics such as second language learning, foundations of TEFL, language in society, linguistics, and the structure of the English language. You can also choose to take a modern foreign language option each year. The placement year offers the opportunity to gain practical experience in a TEFL-related setting, enhancing employability and professional skills.
Graduates are well-prepared for diverse careers, primarily as English Language Teachers in the UK and internationally, across various settings such as private language schools, public schools (requiring local certification), universities, and online platforms. The program's practical teaching components, stand-alone TEFL certificate, and placement year experience significantly enhance employability. Beyond teaching, the strong grounding in language, linguistics, and communication skills opens doors to roles in: Publishing, Journalism, Branding, Advertising, Marketing, Travel, Communications, Interpreting, Translating, Speech and Occupational Therapy (with further training), Educational Administration, and other areas where analytical thinking and language expertise are valued. Graduate outcomes show a significant percentage entering "Teaching and educational professionals" roles.
The University of Essex offers a forward-thinking environment and diverse international community. Its Department of Language and Linguistics is a centre of world-leading research excellence for the social sciences, with the majority of research rated 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent' (REF 2021).
