Academic College: Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Theatre. The University of Victoria offers both a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Theatre. The BA in Theatre provides a broad liberal arts education with a focus on theatre studies, including history, theory, literature, and practical application. It's a more flexible degree, often chosen by students who want to combine theatre with other academic interests or pursue diverse career paths. The BFA in Theatre is a more intensive, professional training program with specialized areas such as acting, design, performance, and production & management. Both degrees emphasize hands-on, experiential learning through participation in Phoenix Theatre mainstage productions and studio work. Students develop critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and practical theatre skills.
Graduates are highly adaptable and find success in a wide range of fields. Career options include: Professional Theatre Artist (Actor, Director, Designer, Stage Manager, Technician, Playwright), Film & Television Production (crew roles, production assistant), Arts Administrator, Event Planner, Communications Specialist, Marketing Professional, Educator (teaching drama in schools or community settings), Creative Entrepreneur, Museum Interpretation, and roles in Law, Politics, and Journalism due to highly transferable skills in teamwork, project management, public speaking, research, critical thinking, and problem-solving. The Co-op optional program provides up to 4 terms (16 months) of paid work experience, significantly enhancing employability.
At UVic’s Faculty of Fine Arts, you’ll find a dynamic community where curiosity, experimentation, and exploration are the cornerstones of the learning environment.
