Academic School/College: College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. This four-year undergraduate program provides a comprehensive understanding of human behavior, cognitive processes, and the biological and social factors influencing mental health. Students gain a solid foundation in the core principles of psychology through topics like human development, memory, perception, cognition, organizational structures, therapy techniques, and neuroscience. The curriculum requires foundational courses such as General Psychology, Principles of Research in Psychology, and statistics. Students then choose from various groups covering areas like: Group 1 (Social, Developmental, Clinical, and I/O Core): e.g., Multicultural Psychology, Psychological Disorders, Developmental Psychology, Social Psychology, Industrial/Organizational Psychology; Group 2 (Perception, Cognitive and Neuroscience Core): e.g., Physiological Psychology, Learning and Memory, Cognitive Psychology, Sensation and Perception; and Group 3/4/5 (Depth, Lab, or Experience courses): offering specialization in areas like abnormal child psychology, health psychology, psychological testing, or advanced lab work. The BS track requires additional rigorous lab science and math courses (e.g., biology, chemistry, physics, calculus). Both tracks emphasize scientific inquiry and critical thinking. The Storrs campus offers extensive opportunities for undergraduate research with faculty, with about half of the majors taking advantage of individualized research courses in faculty laboratories each year. Students can also engage in internships and field experiences.
