Academic faculty/school: Faculty of Arts, School of Urban and Regional Planning (within the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences). This four-year Bachelor of Arts program in Planning focuses on the social science aspects of planning issues, with a broad emphasis on land use planning, urban planning, regional planning, economic development, social issues, and community sustainability. Professional planners help decide what gets built and where, from roads and transit to parks and housing developments, ensuring built environments promote sustainability, prosperity, and a better quality of life. The curriculum includes core planning courses (e.g., planning history, design fundamentals, land use policy, planning law, environmental planning, community engagement, research methods, professional practice, planning studio) alongside options for minors or electives in related areas. Through Arts Work Experience (AWE), undergraduate students can develop and integrate classroom skills with full-time, paid work experience (typically 4, 8, or 12 months) for a work experience designation on their degree parchment. Graduates of the BA Planning program receive an accredited degree, allowing them to pursue membership and training with the Alberta Professional Planners Institute and Canadian Institute of Planners immediately after completing their undergraduate degree.
