Academic College: New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, School of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies. This Bachelor of Arts (BA) program engages in the transdisciplinary and comparative study of the United States as a cultural and political site of ongoing change and conflict. Students explore the historical, political, and cultural underpinnings that bind communities, gaining insight into the American experience with perspectives of marginalized populations. The curriculum teaches diverse methods of analyzing nationalist politics, public and private cultural practices, transnationalism, and nation-making processes of migration. It also brings attention to identity formations around gender, sexuality, race, and ethnicity. As an interdisciplinary field, American Studies unites the social sciences, humanities, and arts to stimulate rigorous conversations about American culture, politics, and history. Students learn to explore knowledge beyond disciplinary boundaries. Key courses include Introduction to American Studies, Introduction to Social and Cultural Analysis, and Social and Cultural Analysis: Method and Theory. The program culminates in a capstone project. There is no second language requirement for this BA.
Graduates are prepared for careers that emphasize creativity, writing, analysis, communication, research, and civic engagement, due to the program's strong emphasis on culture and identity. Common career paths include: Journalism (e.g., travel writer), Government (national, state, local, diplomatic service), Public Relations, Communications, Consulting, Museum Work (curator, education director), Non-Profit Management, Teaching, Publishing, Media, Foreign Service, Law (with further study), Archiving, and work in cultural organizations, historical societies, and businesses for public relations, marketing, advertising, and diverse outreach.
