Academic College: New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, School of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies. This Bachelor of Arts (BA) program provides a rigorous, transdisciplinary, and comparative exploration of sexuality and its intersections with gender, race, class, and nation. Students critically examine the historical, cultural, and political constructions of sexual identities and practices, as well as the social movements and theories that have shaped understandings of queer and sexuality studies. The curriculum explores diverse perspectives, including those of marginalized populations, fostering critical thinking, research skills, and an understanding of social justice issues related to LGBTQ+ communities. Key courses include Introduction to Women and Gender Studies, Introduction to Social and Cultural Analysis, and Social and Cultural Analysis: Method and Theory, alongside a variety of upper-division electives in queer theory, LGBTQ+ history, and sexuality studies. The program culminates in a capstone project. There is no second language requirement for this BA.
Graduates are prepared for careers that emphasize critical analysis, advocacy, communication, and cultural competency, particularly in areas related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Career paths are varied and include: Advocacy (e.g., LGBTQ+ rights organizations), Community Organizing, Counseling (with further study), Education (e.g., K-12, higher education, diversity training), Human Resources (e.g., diversity and inclusion specialist), Journalism, Marketing, Non-Profit Management, Policy Analysis, Public Relations, Research, Social Work (with further study), and roles in healthcare, media, and publishing. This degree also serves as excellent preparation for graduate studies in fields such as Gender Studies, Queer Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, History, Law, Public Administration, Social Work, Counseling, Education, and other related humanities and social science disciplines.
