Academic college: Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions, School of Public Affairs. This 4-year Bachelor of Science (BS) program is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to understand and address society's grandest challenges in public management, policy, and governance. The curriculum provides a comprehensive foundation in public policy, public leadership, public management, and urban studies. Students learn about policy development, public sector ethics, public service research methods, applied statistics, and leadership. The program focuses on professional preparation for careers in government and non-profit organizations, and it is also excellent preparation for graduate study in law, public policy, and public administration. Students can choose from various interdisciplinary areas and may pursue concentrations such as "Law and Policy." The program requires a Senior Capstone Project (PAF 400), which often involves applying learned skills to a real public problem, and also incorporates Solution-Based Learning (SBL) and opportunities for internships.
Graduates are well-prepared for entry- and mid-level supervisory and managerial positions in the public sector, including city, county, state, and federal agencies, as well as in non-profit organizations and in the private sector at the intersection of public affairs and private enterprise. Common career paths include: Policy Analyst, Program Coordinator, Public Administrator, Urban Planner, Community Specialist, Social Services Director, Government Relations Specialist, and roles in law enforcement, national security, and political campaigns. The degree also provides strong preparation for future graduate study in law, public policy (MPP), or public administration (MPA). The increasing demand for public services and anticipated federal government hiring indicate strong job opportunities.
