Department: Department of Philosophy. This one-year full-time (or two years part-time) Master of Arts (MA) in Political and Legal Philosophy is a research-led program that enables students to explore philosophical issues at the core of contemporary political and legal debates. Taught through intensive seminars and individual or small-group tutorials, it provides a solid foundation in central areas of political philosophy and the philosophy of law. Core modules typically include "Advanced Topics in Political Philosophy," "Foundational Issues in Legal Theory," and "Research Skills and Dissemination Practice." You will gain valuable skills in research, analysis, critical thinking, and presentation. Option modules cover a wide range of topics, including constitutional law and theory, issues in the philosophy of criminal law, justice, legitimacy, and democracy, and social justice and political economy. The program culminates in a substantial independent research dissertation. This MA develops the ability to construct and defend coherent arguments, grasp complex ideas, and creatively solve problems related to the intersection of politics and law.
Career options for graduates of this program are diverse and often lead to roles requiring advanced analytical, critical thinking, and research skills, particularly in fields that demand a deep understanding of ethical, social, political, and legal principles. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in academia (especially for those pursuing PhDs), legal professions (e.g., policy analysis, legal research, think tanks), public service, journalism, marketing, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The skills developed are highly valued across various sectors, including central or local government, community organizations, social enterprise, accountancy and banking, and media companies. The program prepares students to evaluate propositions, solve complex problems, and influence debates in their chosen areas of specialization.
