Faculty: Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies. This one-year full-time Master of Arts (MA) program provides a thorough grounding in psychoanalytic theory, exploring how the unconscious affects individuals, societies, and cultures. The curriculum starts with Freud and progresses through the development of object relations, focusing on the 'British School' (including theorists such as Klein, Winnicott, and Bion). The course encourages a critical engagement with psychoanalysis, considering its historical, comparative, and methodological links to clinical experiences. Key topics covered typically include: Reading Freud, Psychoanalytic Theory, Psychoanalysis in Contexts, Psychoanalysis and the Psychosocial, Psychoanalytic Epistemology, The Psychic Life of Gender, and Clinical and Critical: Contemporary Debates in Psychoanalytic Theory. Students also undertake a 12,000-word dissertation. The program is taught through small seminars and workshops by world-leading scholars and highly experienced practitioners. It also offers opportunities for interdisciplinary connections with sociology, philosophy, and literature. The University of Essex is one of only 21 ESRC-accredited Doctoral Training Centres in the UK, meaning this MA can form part of a 1+3 funding opportunity for talented postgraduates.
This MA develops key employability skills such as analytical thinking, evaluation, essay-writing, and research methods in psychoanalysis, applicable to both clinical and academic work. Graduates often pursue further study and training in psychoanalysis, Jungian analysis, or psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Many students are already professionals (clinical and non-clinical) who use the program to deepen their understanding of their work and enhance their careers. Career paths can include: clinical therapeutic practice, social work, counselling, teaching, charity and third sector roles, business, management and clinical therapeutic practice, public administration, policy-making, and entrepreneurial roles. The Department's close links with health, education, and social care services ensure the course is highly credible and relevant for those aiming to make a difference in people's health and lives. 96% of the Department's postgraduate graduates are in employment or further study (Graduate Outcomes 2024).
The University of Essex is a forward-thinking institution with a diverse international community, offering a global perspective. It is recognized as a centre of world-leading research excellence for the social sciences (REF 2021). The Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies is internationally recognised for its focus on the unconscious mind in mental health, culture, and society, with strong ties to professional institutions like the Institute of Psychoanalysis and the Tavistock Institute.
