Faculty: Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Language and Linguistics. This one-year full-time (or two-year part-time) Master of Arts (MA) program provides a thorough grounding in research from the perspective of linguistics on human language processing, the representation of language in the brain, and first and second language acquisition. The curriculum covers the processing and acquisition of sounds, words, and sentences, examines different kinds of language disorders, and investigates the relevance of data from human language processing to our understanding of the nature of language. Students learn how to design and conduct experiments and analyze the results. Key compulsory modules include: MA Dissertation, Experimental Analysis, Topics in Psycholinguistics, and Developmental Psycholinguistics. Optional modules allow students to specialize further in areas such as how languages are shaped and processed (morphology, phonology), historical linguistics, how we articulate speech, how words are represented and accessed in the mind, language and the brain, or how social cues like accents shape language processing. The department boasts state-of-the-art facilities for psycholinguistic experiments, including an Eye-tracking lab, a Baby Lab (for child language development research), a Computer Lab for behavioral studies, and an EEG lab for exploring how the brain processes language.
This MA develops advanced analytical, research, and data analysis skills highly valued across various sectors. Graduates are well-prepared for further academic research, including PhD studies in psycholinguistics, linguistics, or related fields. Alumni have gone on to academic posts at top universities. Beyond academia, career paths can include: Speech and Language Therapy (often requiring further specialized training), teaching (English language, linguistics), publishing, journalism, administration, public service, market research, user experience (UX) design (especially for language-based interfaces), and roles requiring expertise in language and communication. The University's Employability and Careers Centre offers support for work experience, internships, placements, and voluntary opportunities.
The University of Essex is a forward-thinking institution with a diverse international community, fostering a global learning environment. It is recognized as a centre of world-leading research excellence for the social sciences (REF 2021), particularly in the Department of Language and Linguistics, which provides a research-intensive environment. The university offers a location close to beautiful countryside that's only an hour away from London by train, providing a balance of serene study environment and access to a major global city.
