School: School of Culture and Creative Arts, College of Arts. This one-year full-time (or 24 months part-time) Master of Letters (MLitt) program offers a blend of practical, theoretical, and historical engagement with various forms of writing and production for theatre. It is designed for those wishing to develop playwriting skills and knowledge of script development and support, opening the way to many theatre roles, including dramaturgy. The program, which is the only one in Scotland combining playwriting with dramaturgy, teaches about the changing roles of playwrights and dramaturgs in contemporary theatre globally. Core courses include "Research Methods," "Playwriting 1," "Debating Dramaturgy," and "Contemporary Dramaturgical Practices." Students then choose to specialize in a pathway involving a dramaturgy placement or the creation of a full-length script (Playwriting 2). The program culminates in an independent research-based project over the summer, which can take the form of a dissertation or a practice-as-research project. Students work with professional writers, dramaturgs, and theatre-makers, and have opportunities to develop major scripts through workshops and staged readings with professional actors and directors. Access to theatre and production facilities, including a black-box studio theatre and the James Arnott theatre, is available.
Career options for graduates are diverse within the theatre and wider creative industries. The program equips playwrights and potential dramaturgs with knowledge of various writing roles in theatre. Graduates have gone on to become commissioned playwrights, production dramaturgs, theatre critics, literary advisors, doctoral students, theatre makers, and academics. The growing recognition of the dramaturg's role and the transferable skills in research, project management, and critical reflection gained from the program enhance employability. The critical components also provide a strong foundation for those wishing to progress to doctoral study.
