This two-year Master of Science program in Orthoptics (Pre-registration), offered by the Department of Orthoptics within the School of Health Sciences in the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences, is designed for graduates with a relevant undergraduate degree to become registered orthoptists. The curriculum provides intensive education and clinical training, focusing on the diagnosis and management of eye movement disorders, binocular vision problems, and related conditions. Students will develop advanced skills in assessment, treatment planning, and therapeutic techniques through theoretical learning and extensive practical placements in various hospital and community eye care settings, preparing them to meet the standards required by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) in the UK.
Career options for graduates of this program are as registered orthoptists in a range of healthcare settings, primarily in hospital eye departments, community eye clinics, and sometimes in private practice or research. Orthoptists work with patients of all ages who have squints, double vision, eye movement problems, and other binocular vision disorders to improve their vision and quality of life. The MSc qualification allows graduates to enter the profession at a postgraduate level.
The University of Liverpool is a member of the UK's prestigious Russell Group, known for its research-intensive learning environment and high academic standards, particularly within the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences. As one of the six original red brick universities, it has a long-standing reputation for excellence in higher education. The university offers excellent graduate prospects, and the Department of Orthoptics within the School of Health Sciences provides strong links with ophthalmology departments and eye clinics for valuable and comprehensive placement opportunities in orthoptics. The January intake offers an alternative start date for postgraduate study.
