School: School of Social and Political Sciences, College of Social Sciences. This one-year full-time (or 24 months part-time) Master of Science (MSc) program provides an advanced understanding of the intricate interplay between politics, the media, civil society, and public opinion. The program is unique in Scotland and one of very few political communication programs in the UK taught mainly by Politics and International Relations specialists, rather than scholars of media and communication studies. The curriculum is designed to help students understand how information flows and influences contemporary societies, both domestically and internationally, across diverse platforms, structures, and systems. Core courses typically include "Media and Democracy," "Political Institutions and Communication," and "Research Design for Politics and International Relations." Students also select optional courses covering topics such as authoritarian political communication, the Internet and civil society, the psychology of political communication, and media and conflict. The program culminates in a dissertation, a research project of the student's own design, completed under the supervision of a specialist member of staff. Students will develop a wide range of transferable skills, including conveying complex ideas effectively, both verbally and in writing, and presenting convincing arguments based on careful scrutiny of research evidence.
Career options for graduates are diverse and span various sectors where understanding the dynamics of political communication is critical. Graduates are well-prepared for employment in politics (e.g., political parties, campaign groups), journalism, strategic communication, public relations, public affairs, diplomacy, and related fields. They can work in government, non-profit organizations, international bodies, and the private sector. The program also provides a strong foundation for those wishing to pursue further academic study and research at the PhD level. Past graduates have gone on to work for political parties, campaign groups, non-profit organizations, the civil service, and have established successful careers in journalism, business, and academia.
The University of Glasgow is a member of the UK's prestigious Russell Group, signifying its world-class research and teaching. As the fourth oldest university in the English-speaking world, it boasts a rich history and academic tradition. It is also a member of Universitas 21 (U21), a global network of world-leading, research-intensive universities, highlighting its international standing. The School of Social and Political Sciences offers a vibrant and diverse student body with students from all over the world, enriching the learning experience. The program is taught by expert staff who conduct research directly related to political communication, ensuring cutting-edge developments in the field are integrated into the curriculum.
