Faculty: Faculty of Life Sciences, School of Biological Sciences. This four-year integrated Master of Science (Honours) program in Plant Sciences offers an advanced and in-depth exploration of plant biology, from cellular and molecular levels to ecosystems. The curriculum builds on the BSc content, covering the diversity, evolution, and function of plants, with a strong focus on cutting-edge research in functional genomics, bioinformatics, plant developmental biology, plant pathology, cell signalling, pollination biology, ecology, plant conservation, and systems biology. The additional fourth year is dedicated to advanced master's-level study, including an extended research project or dissertation (often working within an active research lab), and specialist modules. This provides intensive training in research methodologies, critical thinking, and advanced scientific inquiry. Practical experience is a key component throughout, including laboratory sessions, field courses, and extensive independent research. The University's Botanic Garden, with over 4,500 plant species, serves as a valuable teaching and research resource. Teaching is conducted by world-leading researchers in state-of-the-art facilities within the Life Sciences Building.
Career options for graduates of this advanced program are particularly strong for those aiming for research-intensive roles or further postgraduate study (e.g., PhD). Graduates are well-prepared for roles as research scientists (in academia, government institutes, or industrial settings, especially in plant biotechnology, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals), plant breeders, conservation scientists, bioinformaticians, and environmental consultants. The MSci provides a competitive edge for securing high-level scientific roles and funding for doctoral studies.
