Academic school/college: College of Design, School of Planning, Public Policy and Management (PPPM). This four-year Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science program in Planning, Public Policy and Management begins as a "Pre-Major." Students initially declare as pre-PPPM majors and then apply for formal admission to the PPPM major, typically in the term prior to achieving junior class standing (90-105 credits), having completed prerequisite courses like economics and introductory PPPM courses. The curriculum provides a thorough grounding in the principles of civic responsibility, environmental sustainability, and international understanding. It focuses on how governments, nonprofit organizations, and private-sector firms address societal problems, emphasizing experiential learning, evidence-based decision-making, and interdisciplinary study. Core courses cover public policy, city planning, the nonprofit sector, quantitative methods, urban Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and policy/planning analysis. Students can tailor their degree through electives in areas such as urban planning and development, environment and sustainability, nonprofit administration, public leadership, and social/health policy.
Career options for graduates of this program are diverse, enabling them to make a difference in communities, states, and countries. Graduates are prepared for entry-level positions in local, state, and federal agencies, as well as nonprofit organizations and private firms that address public sector issues. Potential roles include urban planner, community development specialist, policy analyst, program manager, nonprofit administrator, public servant, and roles in environmental policy or social justice. The program provides a strong basis for graduate study in fields such as urban planning, public policy, nonprofit management, business, law, and public health. Internships are highly recommended and help students explore careers and build professional networks.
